Assalamualaikum dan salam sejhtera.
Before I start my writing today, I would like to share about my thought on how important it is not to just raise kids that are only know how to read and excel in exams but, to become excellent in every aspects of their lives and to become a member of society who not only think about themselves and their small families, but who are able to think about building nation, empowering people and to just be a kind human being so that they know how to appreciate all the things they have, so that they know they have to give back. Good example Dato Lee Chong Wei is. He is one of many people ok, maybe not that many but people with privileges. He's got talent, he knows it. He doesn't give up. He gives his best and when he could not deliver, he apologize. If only each and everyone of us can behave and be like him, we are able to build a strong nation. 'Negara maju' does not built on LRT, MRT, KLIA, KLCC, it starts with a society that think and behave like him. All levels of society starting with the ministers, the sultans, the govt servants, scholarships receivers, corporate, students, teachers and each and everyone of us.

So enough of that, let's get back to business. Before when I was pregnant of my lil hooty, I did some research about genius babies. I forgot why but I remember I watched videos, I read articles about them. Really, Mr. Google helped me a lot in feeding my curiosity. So I found out that one of the techniques that is important in ensuring our survival in this world including us grown ups not just babies and kids is the ability to observe and copy. This is the method that children use to learn and adapt to this world. Knowing this one important fact, we could use this as a tool.
1. Talking to your babies and toddlers.
Babies
You may find it weird talking to a baby but it is actually fun and you will feel closer to your baby. There are so many things that you can talk about like
- What you are doing right now; i.e."Mummy is switching on the lights, look at the room now it is bright".
- Sing a song. Simple and catchy songs like lagu tiga kupang, 10 little indian boys, abc songs, etc. The list is endless.
- Read a book. Make it fun, make sounds of the aeroplane, monkeys, anything. Read the Quran if you want. Just read to them.
- Zikir.
- Show them their surroundings; you can tell the names of animals, kitchen utensils or when you go out groceries shopping, you can show them vegetables for example.
Toddlers
Talk, talk, talk to your kids. There are do's and dont's and if you want to find out more about that, you can refer to the reference link below. The key on how to talk to your toddlers is to explain everything. They are too little to understand metaphor. So, use simple words and short sentences. Sometimes they still don't understand it. But you can keep on trying by using simpler words and kinder manner. Show them the sky. You can ask them the colou, the shape of a tree, rocks, animals, etc.Help them look into things in so many ways. And remember, when you want anything from your toddler always find an agreement, there is no need to argue with a toddler. Boleh bawa berbincang. =D
2. Flashcards
Babies
Flashcards can be used as early as 3 months old with several rules; Pictures/words/numbers should be large and clear, the presentation should be brief. The time or the number of frequencies depend on your baby. Go fast. Show the flashcards as fast as you can. Babies as little as one year old can recognize words with this method. You can search on youtube, there are so many videos on babies reading.
Please go with the flow. Do not force them and go easy on them. Remember they are only babies.
Toddlers
As for toddlers, we still can use the above method of flashcards to teach new words and new language or to add their vocabulary. But, by this age we can add more games and activities into using the flashcards. For example, we can start using a full sentence using the flash card. Let's say we have a card of 'FISH'. We can ask them to repeat our sentences, "This is a fish, a fish lives in water" and so on and so forth. One more simple game that we can play with them is to find a card within cards. Ask them to find 'FISH' or ask them to find 'an animal that starts with F' or 'an nimal that lives in water'. You can find more interesting ideas in the link below under references.
3. Games for toddlers

Games for preschooler |
Last but not least, play games that can help kids with concentration, self control and develop executive-function skils. Study shows that kids who are good at Simon says game like do better in school and a child’s ability at age 4 to pay attention and complete a task, the very skills learned in game play, were the greatest predictors of whether he or she finished college by age 25. Plus, a study found that those who started the school year with low levels of self-control showed improvement after playing games in class, including a version of Red Light, Green Light. These games teach the children focus and attention, working memory to remember rules, mental flexibility (to do the opposite) and self-control. Freeze tag or kejar-kejar is one of the simplest games that we can start with our kids. It's not always about books and study you see. ;)
